4 Games To Teach Leadership Skills To Students

A recently published TOI article mentioned: Three students from Vadodara off to NY to participate in TED-ED.

Proud moment, isn’t it?

All the three students were from the best schools of Baroda. One of the students is from the Nalanda International School.

To get selected for such a knowledgeable event, a school needs to work on the all-round development of the children. Leadership is also a virtue that a child may bring to his/her use at different phases of life.

Warren Bennis once quoted: Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.

Creating leaders requires a holistic approach to learning in schools. It captures all the aspects where leadership skills can be developed. This can include opportunities like formalised training, experiences like internships, or roles like being the monitor of a class or president of a student body.

It’s a school's duty to make sure that when students cross the stage at graduation, they enter the workforce as the next generation of leaders.

Hence, we have listed 4 games that can help the students to develop leadership qualities during their schooling:

Same or Different

This simple game doesn’t require any material. The children have to sit in a circle. Select one child to take the first chance. Ask the child to point at someone in the circle who looks similar to him in appearance or even dress colour. When the child chooses another student, ask him to point out the differences and similarities that they have with one another. Through this, a teacher can make the students understand that each person has its individuality and it needs to be treated with respect. This is an important quality that every leader of tomorrow must have.

Create a New You

This game requires materials such as crayons, construction paper, magazines, scissors, and newspapers. Ask children to sketch on the board or paper. The picture should be theirs. Tell them to make associations which can depict that the picture is theirs.

They can use a magazine or newspaper cutout which can include their favourite activities and food, pets and anything that is a sign of their identification and where they live. Once completed, let the children present the poster to other children. This creative activity will improve the kid’s confidence to lead and present oneself efficiently.

Lead the Blindfolded

This game reveals the essence of communication skills in a leader. It can take place in a large indoor or outdoor area. The children have to be divided into two groups with blindfolds. The teams should be placed at opposite sides of the space and the teacher should instruct everyone except one member of each team to put on a blindfold. The one member, who is not wearing a blindfold has to lead his/her team across the field by providing explicit instructions. The teacher has to make sure that each member of the team leads the team at regular intervals. The team which is able to cross the finish line wins through the efficient leadership of their non-blindfolded team member.

Planning Strategies

Planning strategies are a vital leadership skill. Taking time to discuss and creating strategies helps a leader in making decisions. The teacher should assist the students to break a large task into small groups. Assign them a big task just like conducting a function. Show them a plan that can help them in performing the task step by step. Evaluate each student’s job and provide them with suggestions to improve themselves.
